Assign Students to Groups

Carmen :Quick Groups

Enrolling students in a group is a two-step process:

  1. Select the group from the View Categories dropdown box
    • If only one category was initially created it will already be listed as the default category
  2. Click the Enroll Students in Selected Groups (Enroll users) link in the Actions column
Although we created two groups (Lab and Projects) we only need to enroll students in the Lab group since we specified the Projects groups would allow students to enroll themselves to a particular group on the Enrollment Types screen.
Assign students to groups

Display all groups within a group category while assigning students to minimize assigning a student to more than one group.

Sort students alphabetically by first name (ascending or descending) or last name (ascending or descending) by clicking the First Name or Last Name link and clicking the arrow beside the link to sort ascending (Ascending) or descending (Descending).

Note: It is typically easiest to sort the student listing alphabetically ascending by last name.

Assign students to a group

To enroll students to a group simply click the checkbox (Checked) correcponding to their name and the group number you want them to be enrolled into from the group listing grid.

As students are enrolled an icon (Assigned to one or more groups) denoting their enrollment will appear beside their name.

Just for fun... there are four errors with these enrollments. Can you find them?

Student assignments complete

Errors found!

  1. Marshall Abbott is enrolled in Group 1 and Group 7
  2. Marilyn Darlling is enrolled in Group 4 and Group 9
  3. Robert Ubermyer is enrolled in Group 1 and Group 5
  4. Sandra Vermillion is not enrolled in any group

Students enrolled in more than one group will show with an upside down exclamation point (Error) beside their name.

Students without an enrollment will not display as an error.

You should reenroll those students enrolled in more than one group so that there are an equal number of students in each group, if possible.

Error checking

Errors Fixed!

  1. Marshall Abbott is now enrolled in only Group 1
  2. Marilyn Darlling is now enrolled in only Group 9
  3. Robert Ubermyer is now enrolled in only Group 5
  4. Sandra Vermillion is now enrolled in Group 9

Once an error has been fixed the exclamation point (Error) icon is removed from beside the offending students name.

You can also spot verify you have an equal number of students in each group by looking at the group heading at the top of each column where the number of users (students) is shown for the group.

Remember to Save your changes.

Note: There will be no notification you have saved your changes once you click Save.

Errors fixed

As a final verification you have successfully enrolled all students in a group you can report all students who have been enrolled/not enrolled.

Uncheck the Enrolled checkbox, leaving Not Enrolled checked, then click Search. This will give you a listing of all students that have not been enrolled in a group.

Repeat the process for enrolling groups for any students on the Not Enrolled report.

Return to the listing of categories by clicking the Category List (Category list) link at the top of the screen.
