Neonatal Service

Our Services

The Farm Animal Neonatal Section at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Ohio State provides complete state-of-the-art neonatal consultation on farm animal clients (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and alternative livestock such as llamas, alpacas and deer).

Service Highlights

Full neonatal care service is provided for sick neonates, including IgG testing and plasma transfusion service. We recommend bringing the dam of sick neonates with the patient so that nursing and neonate/dam bonding is not interrupted. A "cria-sitter" service is also offered for continuous monitoring of sick crias, at an additional cost. Sick neonates will typically be hospitalized for approximately 7-10 days, although sometimes longer stays will be necessary.

What to Expect

All cases are examined and treated in a team effort with veterinarians, senior veterinary students and veterinary technicians. Most cases are seen, treated and discharged same day. Average outpatient stay: 2 hrs.
