Clinical Investigation: Traumatic Head Injury in Horses

Investigators at the The Ohio State University Galbreath Equine Center, Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, Hagyard Equine Medical Institute and the University of Kentucky are conducting a descriptive study, funded by the American Quarter Horse Foundation, investigating naturally occurring cases of traumatic head/brain injury (THI) in horses. The information gained from this one year study (October 2008 to September 2009) will be used to help prevent the occurrence of THI and to diagnose the severity of head injury with greater accuracy. We are seeking information from referring veterinarians, horse owners, and horse handlers regarding the events surrounding any case of suspected THI (see questionnaire and checklist below).

If you would like further information, please contact Dr. Sam Hurcombe at The Ohio State University. Email: Samuel.Hurcombe@cvm.osu.edu; Phone: 614 292 6661.
