Equine Research

The current emphasis of the laboratory is substrate oxidation, muscle glycogen resynthesis and glucose metabolism in response to training and acute dietary interventions. Another focus of the laboratory has been to develop an understanding of the effects of commonly used medications, such as Lasix (furosemide) and Bute (phenylbutazone), on horses both at rest and during exercise. Other areas of study include thermoregulation, fluid and electrolyte homeostasis, mechanisms underlying responses to training, aging, use of alkalinizing agents, the effect of anesthetics, analgesics, and tranquillizers in exhausted horses, and the effect of training and exercise on pharmacokinetics of drugs.
