Whether the human species or man's best friend, there are unfortunate health crises that merit blood transfusion. While many of us are accustomed to "blood drives" from the American Red Cross during times of extreme need, there is no "Red Cross" to support our 4-legged friends in their time of blood need.
The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine Animal Blood Bank is one of the few resources in this region, should a beloved pet require blood products.
Through our Strategic Alliance with The Iams Company and the generous support and cooperation of pet owners and other corporate sponsors, our Blood Bank is on the way to become a major regional center, equipped to save the lives of our furry friends. Won't you see what you can do to help today?
Yes. While different from the typing system used for humans, there is a unique manner in which we are able to categorize blood from prospective donors and decide whether they meet our eligibility requirements and fall into one of our donor type categories.
Many of the dogs and cats who donate blood are rescued from desperate situations, and in exchange for this vital service to their kindred canines and felines, they receive a loving home – whether at foster homes, or after permanent adoption placement. We are first-and-foremost concerned about the health and well-being of our donors. In fulfilling our mission, our donors receive excellent medical attention and superior nutrition, courtesy of The Iams Company. All our donors are tested for transmissible diseases in order to maintain the highest standards of safety and excellence with our blood products.
Our favorite dog breed for blood donation is the Greyhound. They have the perfect vascular system for bleeding (big veins!), are the perfect size and weight, and in general have a fabulous temperament, making them pleasant candidates. In addition, a high percentage of them are equivalent to the human Universal blood type. We admit that we're pretty smitten with these creatures and heavily involved with Greyhound Rescue. However, they are not the only dog breed who can donate; any healthy dog weighing more than 50 pounds can potentially become a great donor! We are also frequently in need of new feline blood donors.
There are some terrific benefits and incentives for those who meet our eligibility and typing requirements. All we ask in return is that the owner/foster parent be reliable in bringing their pet to our Animal Blood Bank for donation. Learn more about donor benefits.
