Napoleon Veterinary Clinic Externship Scholarship

Napoleon Veterinary Clinic is a mixed animal practice located in Napoleon, Ohio.

Goal:

To provide an opportunity to experience daily veterinary medicine in a mixed animal practice.  Emphasis will be on dairy practice but also include companion animal.

Areas of emphasis include palpation, monitoring of herd reproductive parameters, production medicine evaluation, herd disease monitoring, staff interactions, client communication, and daily practice management issues.  In addition, experience companion animal events when dairy portion is completed for the day.

Eligibility:

The applicant must be a member of OSU/CVM and in good standing.  In addition they must be a member of OSU/CVM Food Animal Club and AABP.  The student selected will have completed their second year of professional school prior to the externship opportunity.

The applicant must have interest in dairy practice, but experience is not required.  Preference will be given to students with less experience and serious interest.

The student must have health insurance and professional liability coverage before the externship begins.

Scheduling:

The actual dates for the student experience will be mutually agreed between the student and Napoleon Veterinary Clinic after the recipient is determined.  The externship will be for two weeks beginning on Sunday evening or no later than 6:00 a.m. on Monday morning.  It will continue until Friday afternoon of the second week.  

The student will be expected to participate in any companion animal activities when not performing dairy functions, including emergencies.  A project will be required to be completed during the two weeks.  The project will entail data collection, assimilation and preparation for client presentation.  The project will be such to provide student learning and client benefit.

Scholarship:

The Student will be required to provide transportation to Napoleon Veterinary Clinic as well as appropriate clothing for dairy and companion animal activities. i.e. Coveralls, boots, and professional attire for in the office.

Housing includes sleeping quarters, with laundry, refrigerator, microwave and shower provided in the clinic.  Television and Internet access is available. Meals will be the responsibility of the student.

A cash scholarship in the amount of $500.00 will be provided through the OSU/CVM Food Animal Club upon returning to classes in the fall.

Other Items:

  3. Representatives from the Department of Preventive Medicine will be responsible for receiving the applications and determining the recipient.

Application Procedure:

  1. Complete the application and release form.
  2. Include a current 1-2 page resume.
  3. Include a 1 page letter of intent describing your career interests and goals for this experience.
