Lisbon Veterinary Clinic Large Animal Summer Practice Experience Scholarship

Lisbon Veterinary Clinic is a six doctor mixed practice in beautiful Columbiana County (northeast) Ohio.  Four veterinarians perform large animal duties consisting of 45% Dairy, 45% Equine, and 10% Beef, Camelids, and Small Ruminants.

Goal:

To provide first or second year OSU veterinary students the opportunity to experience 6 weeks of mixed large animal practice.  Duties would include riding with and assisting a large animal veterinarian on daily calls.  The focus will be to provide opportunities to experience all aspects of dairy and/or equine medicine and surgery in a private practice setting.  In addition, the student will be required to complete a project focusing on dairy or equine preventive or production medicine during the experience.  The project will be approved and guided by a veterinarian on the Lisbon Vet Clinic staff.

Eligibility:

Open to OSU CVM students who have successfully completed either their first or second year of study.  Candidates must be active, paid members of the Food Animal Club and have a sincere interest in large animal practice.  The deadline for application will be April 3, 2008.  One student will be selected per year.  Applications will be reviewed and the recipient determined through a selection committee assembled and led by the Chair of the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine.

Scheduling:

The summer experience will be for a total of six weeks.  This shall commence on the Monday six weeks prior to Labor Day and end on Labor Day (end of day). In 2008 the dates will be from the last week of July through Labor Day.  Requirements will include being present 5 days per week (weekdays) with weekends being optional, except for the two weekends of the county fairs (Columbiana and Mahoning Counties), which will be mandatory. Daily fair rounds and treatments as well as sample collection will be part of the fair duties.

Scholarship:

Students will need to provide their own transportation to and from Lisbon Veterinary Clinic as well as any "off duty" transportation.  Housing will be provided at no charge to the recipient during the practice experience.  Meals will be the responsibility of the recipient.  Some kitchen facilities will be available.  Upon successful completion of the six week practice experience and the preventive medicine project (as determined by the appropriate faculty of VPM), the student will receive a cash scholarship of $1,000.  The cash award should be available by September 30, following the summer experience.  Recipients must provide rubber boots sufficient for large animal practice.  Coveralls will be provided.
 

Other Items:

  1. Students must provide his/her own transportation to and from Lisbon Veterinary Clinic as well as any "off duty" transportation.

  4. Recipients must provide rubber boots sufficient for large animal practice.  Coveralls will be provided by Lisbon Veterinary Clinic.

  1. Complete the application and release form.
  2. Include a current 1-2 page resume.
  3. Include a 1 page letter of intent describing your career interests and goals for this experience.
