Opportunities at OSU
Your veterinary education is what you make of it, and there are several opportunities to supplement the curriculum at the Ohio State University. Listed below are some of the opportunities that the College of Veterinary Medicine currently offers to motivated students.
- Both the Columbus and the Cleveland Zoo have DVMs with adjunct appointments in the department of veterinary preventative medicine.
- The department of veterinary preventative medicine has a partnership with the Cleveland Zoo and its DVMs, offering various interactions to benefit Ohio State students.
- Bob Sherding and Bruce Hall are on the Zoo Residency Advisory Committee for the Columbus Zoo. The Committee meets quarterly to oversee the program of the Columbus Zoo resident.
- Staff of the Columbus Zoo teaches two electives in Zoo medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine.
- Senior students have an official selective in Zoo Medicine and Surgery.
- Most of the necropsies from the Columbus Zoo are preformed at the Ohio State University, providing interesting and unique learning material for both veterinary students and pathology residents.
- The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, the College of Biological Sciences, and the Columbus Zoo have an agreement to fund an annual OSU-Columbus Zoo Research Grant.
- For those interested in companion exotic and avian animals, Dr. Barbara Ogleesbee has an auxiliary appointment, teaching an Avian Elective for third year students, a Pocket Pet Elective for third year students, and participating in the Non-Mammalian Core Course for second year students.
- The “Chair’s Selective” for senior rotations in veterinary clinical science includes a 2 week Avian-Exotic Selective at the private practice of Dr. Gary Riggs. He is ABVP certified in avian medicine and consults at the Cleveland Zoo.
- During the senior off-campus elective experience, the interested student can arrange their own experiences with zoos and facilities around the country.
