Regarding Greyhounds

Greyhound Health and Wellness Program

Greyhound head looking at pageThe GHWP is primarily an outreach and teaching effort that incorporates basic elements of shelter medicine.

The program consists of:

  • Free consultation for Greyhound owners and veterinarians
  • A website with current Greyhound health information
  • A list-serv for Veterinarians for Retired Racers, and an annual scientific conference on this area
  • Educational programs for Greyhound owners and veterinarians
  • Free chemotherapy for retired racers with cancer
  • Financial assistance (through development funds and research grants) for Greyhound medical and surgical care at the OSU VTH.

The GHWP provides a free consultation service for owners of retired racers and their veterinarians. Dr. Couto and his team spend 1-2 hours a day responding to e-mails and answering phone calls on problems in the breed.

The College recently launched (January 2006) the Greyhound Health and Wellness website, in order to provide additional information to owners, veterinarians, and Greyhound adoption groups.

Dog being spayedIn collaboration with Greyhound Adoption of Ohio (GAO) in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, we established an extremely successful spay, neuter, and dental clinic for retired racers in 2004. In this program, third-year veterinary students under the direct supervision of Small Animal Surgery faculty and residents perform routine spays, neuters, and dental prophylaxis in 50-75 Greyhounds/year.  In addition to directly improving the health of the dogs and the expertise of veterinary students involved in the clinic, it provides us with an opportunity to evaluate other health issues in the breed (see below).

In January of 2004 Dr. Couto founded Veterinarians for Retired Racing Greyhounds; this group currently has approximately 75 members, and established a list-server to discuss health-related issues in the breed. The group meets in January during the North American Veterinary Conference in Orlando, Florida, where they also present a scientific session on Greyhound-related topics.

The GHWP provides chemotherapy at no charge for retired racers with cancer. Drugs are purchased and shipped with development funds donated for such purpose; in return for receiving the drugs, owners and veterinarians provide clinical information and follow up on cancer-bearing Greyhounds, and submit a blood sample to Dr. Comstock’s lab for genetic testing.
